An iconic, celebrated Mid Century home by Edward Caradoc Ashton of Ashton & Fisher (1960) required a sensitive yet contemporary refurbishment. The kitchen—famously featured in Australian House & Garden (1961) and Women’s Weekly (1962)—needed materials that acknowledged its heritage without merely replicating it. Consequently, the original cedar panelling has been preserved; cabinetry now features new laminate and timber, and the floor is refreshed with terracotta tiles, creating a respectful dialogue between original and new.
The design carefully honours key site conditions: preserving mature trees, navigating a steep slope, and capturing sweeping northwest views down the gully. To honour the original owners’ aspiration for an alpine atmosphere, the home has been updated with a Western Red Cedar hot tub nestled on the embankment, framed by towering redwoods.
