Driven by the clients’ love of New York Brownstones, this compact 320m² site in North Adelaide demanded a considered footprint, ensuring every millimetre was carefully utilised. Responding to an extensive brief within a constrained site, the house is organised as a series of layered levels, creating a partially buried home and reinterpreting the traditional Brownstone stoop and grand entry in travertine. A monumental, sculpted façade is formed from enduring materials selected to age and patina gracefully, creating a considered relationship with the adjoining heritage fabric of North Adelaide. To the rear, the traditional street frontage gives way to a distinctly contemporary Mediterranean terrace, with open-plan living spaces arranged around an elevated cantilevered pool. Above, an amber-toned, jewellery-box ensuite floats over the pool, creating a moment of colour and intimacy within the restrained material palette.

A compact urban home that balances the grandeur and formality of the Brownstone with a distinctly contemporary approach to living.
