The Bird in Hand Block is an amenities facility designed for visitors to the popular Adelaide Hills winery, cellar door, and restaurant. Primarily a functional space, the design aims to shift perceptions and reinterpret the usual approach to public ablution blocks. In collaboration with Enoki, the studio worked to move past the utilitarian norm, creating a building that complements its rural setting and extends the inviting nature of the existing venues on the property.
Drawing direct inspiration from the practical, archetypal sheds found throughout the winery, the design reinterprets this familiar form. The resulting structure creates a sharp architectural contrast against the massive scale and flattened peaks of the neighbouring barrel shed, balancing daily function with a refined aesthetic presence on the estate.
