Standing on a corner allotment, the original 1930’s Kentish-Gable Tudor at Somerton Park presented an opportunity for refurbishment for a young, growing family. For our clients, they requested a home with an interior bursting with colour. As an indigenous Noongar man, story-telling is a key part of Marshall’s relationship with meaning. The artwork throughout the home reflects this, each piece holding the stories of their family’s journey. Indigenous artwork became the catalyst for each space and the palettes chosen.

Clinker brickwork was retained and rejoiced, left raw externally and painted white internally to lift the dark interior. Internally, ceilings were left white but walls painted in green ‘garlic suede’ to contrast vertical planes. New supporting exposed steel is painted white, with dark timbers removed or painted in lightening pastels.

Entering, you are greeted with a peach painted archway defining entry to the front formal lounge. To enhance the monochromatic indigenous art in the front lounge, all vertical elements are painted ‘forest green’ reinforcing an overall soothing palette throughout and allowing white fabrics to stand out. The existing bookshelves and fireplace are also colour-blocked in ‘forest green’.

Reconfigured bathrooms are laden with natural materials in terracotta, terrazzo, and travertine. The laundry and office spaces make use of burnt ochre and Moroccan clay laminate, contextual to displayed artwork. Large picture windows are highlighted with ‘peach-fizz’ lined bench seats. The kitchen defined with pink ‘pavlova’ terrazzo and green laminate paying homage to the 1930’s palette and preserved green stained glass.

The interior design at Clinker House enhances the existing generous proportions with a contemporary, colourful new face. Much like the lollies we once enjoyed, Clinker House is a home not shy of colour, it is a juicy delight of furniture and art curated in harmony, and is a true reflection of the joyful family that call it home.
